Album Notes

We Are One

I wrote this song based on a very special Hebrew prayer called Sh’ma Yis-ra’el which teaches us that we are all One with G-d and with the universe.   This is a song about belonging, whether to a specific community or to the human race. No matter our individual differences, We Are One.

Shalom Aleichem/Modim Anachnu Lach (Hebrew)

The Shalom Aleichem prayer typically has four verses.  The first verse acknowledges the angels of peace that come to us on the Sabbath.  The second verse welcomes them. The third verse asks the angels to bless us with peace, and the fourth verse sends them on their way with the hope and anticipation of having them come back on the next Sabbath.  In this original composition, I replaced the third verse with a prayer of thanks to G-D (Modim Anachnu Lach); for in every moment of gratefulness, we are blessed with peace.

For It All

This song was inspired by a dear friend, who bravely lived her last months of life with an inoperable brain tumor.  No matter how painful things got, my friend always remained grateful for the life she had and for all that G-d had given her.  For It All is a song about being grateful for what we have in our lives. Whenever we are in the moment feeling grateful, there is no room for hate, jealousy, regrets, or despair. What would our lives be like—and what would the world be like—if we could all simply be grateful?

Shehecheyanu (Life Goes On)

The Shehecheyanu prayer is one that is said to commemorate the first of things.  It could be the first night of Passover, the first of a new year, the first bite of a particular fruit of the season, the first particular kind of event in our lives, or the first of a particular kind of event for the year. So often in our lives, we have hardships and tragedies, and it sometimes seems as though life will never be joyful and happy again. If only in those moments of sadness and despair we can remember that - no matter what happens in life – there will always be the next Shehecheyanu, then maybe it will be easier to get ourselves through the darkness until the sun shines down on us once again.

Hashkiveinu (Prayer For Our Children)

The Hashkiveinu prayer is said on Shabbat and on holidays, and often by some just before they go to sleep.  We ask G-d to watch over our souls, or to simply protect us as we go through our days.  But when we become parents and grandparents, that prayer takes on a whole new meaning.  As parents and grandparents, what we want is not so much that G-d watch over us, but that G-d watch over and protect our children and our grandchildren – because so long as our children are all right, we will be all right.
